Does the Langston Blvd Plan Measure Up on Trees?
The draft Langston Blvd. Plan being prepared by the County includes a Section on Sustainability and Resilience with a goal to “Transform Langston Boulevard into a “Green” corridor with street trees, increased landscaping and pervious surfaces, and environmentally sustainable and energy efficient buildings. They state that “The plan for Langston Boulevard will: · Establish guidelines for increased planting areas and tree canopy coverage in redevelopment areas,” and “Establish streetscape design guidelines with biophilic elements”, but no concrete actions. One of the areas of greatest concern voiced by residents was “The environmental impact of new development, including adding impervious areas and stormwater runoff, and eliminating trees and green space.” Compared to other man-made, gray infrastructure, green infrastructure gets little recognition for its potential contributions to stormwater, heat islands, energy, and health benefits to ‘Sustainability and Resilience”.
