Air Quality

The American Lung Association’s city rankings in its 2019 “State of the Air” report found that Arlington received an ozone grade of F and a 24-hour Particulate Pollution grade of only B. According to the EPA, ozone is a powerful oxidant that irritates airways especially for those with asthma, children, older adults and outdoor workers.

Urban trees can reduce pollutants and help cool cities. The Nature Conservancy has studied “How Urban Trees Can Save Lives”.

Trees help shade us from UV radiation which can cause formation of ozone, skin cancer, premature aging, eye damage and immune system suppression. Citizens and others in Arlington who need to work outdoors or use public transportation may be at higher risk. EPA has listed the details and street trees and trees in public spaces may mitigate the risks.

Well-being & Mental Health

Trees and green space improve mental health in terms of stress reduction, attention disorders, memory, feelings of well-being, social cohesion of communities and lower crime rates.

The County Forester has documented many benefits from trees in posts to a website.
