I live in Lyon Park area and enjoy regularly walking around the neighborhood and appreciating nature including trees. Today I was walking on a footpath that runs through 2nd rd (see https://goo.gl/maps/2LSWc2HhDx72 )
There is a private lot on 2nd rd and North Edgewood that is in process of being completely demolished (see https://goo.gl/maps/2WJR7nLUgMt) . Today I noticed that all the trees on lot had Red X’s spray painted on them.
If what I have witnessed in the past holds true going forward, then what will happen next is all the trees will be cut down on the lot, the house replacing the demolished house will be huge leaving less yard space then before, and at best a young sapling will be planted that will take at least another 50 years to reach the size of one of the multiple trees that were cut down (overall a net loss for trees canopy)
Given that this area is in high demand and larger house = more money for the seller I don’t see how this trend can be stopped. It’s a shame really because I really think in general the size of the houses in this area is excessive for the number of occupants. It would be much better for the common good if houses were more modestly sized and our culture placed more value on green spaces. All that being said, I think Lyon Park currently has a great number of beautiful trees, parks, etc, it would be great if it could be kept that way or even improved.
By the way after writing this I just noticed your site already has a petition regarding this. I will sign that.
