ATAG Challenges Tree Promises in Langston Blvd Plan

Liz Grossman spoke for ATAG saying:

At Monday’s meeting of the Arlington Planning Commision, County representatives claimed that the current Langston Boulevard plan could achieve 35% tree canopy coverage in the core area.  ATAG applauds the County’s goal of achieving 35% tree canopy coverage in Langston Boulevard core, however, we do not believe that the County has the controls in place to achieve this goal.

The County has shown itself to be very good at developing visions and at promising tree canopy alongside development, but it has a very poor track record in delivering on this promise. Development along Columbia Pike demonstrates this.

This was the County’s 2012 vision for South Frederick Street between Columbia Pike and 8th Road South.  This is what is looks like today.

This was the County’s 2012 vision for Columbia Pike between Monroe Street and Quincy Street, and this is the reality on the ground today.

ATAG understands that development and growth of the tree canopy takes time.  However, at some point these efforts have to begin.  Furthermore,  ATAG notes that all “public space” in the Langston Boulevard Plan will be privately owned.  Without appropriate County and controls, ATAG is dubious that 35% tree canopy coverage can be achieved.  ATAG is watching and will hold you accountable.
